Abstract Title: Nurse-Led Nutritional Interventions for Malnourished Patients with Liver Disease: A Scoping Review
Biography: Sungbeom is a graduate student at Yonsei University College of Nursing and a clinical nurse in the Liver Transplantation Unit at Asan Medical Center, Seoul. He is involved in both patient care and research focusing on the nutritional management of patients with liver disease. He has participated in studies on nurse-led interventions to improve patient outcomes and is interested in integrating evidence-based nutritional strategies into clinical practice.
Research Interest: Malnutrition is common in liver disease, as hepatic dysfunction affects key metabolic processes. Nurses play important roles in nutritional care, and several studies have explored nurse-led nutritional interventions, showing that such interventions can improve patients’ outcomes; however, there remains a lack of synthesis regarding their reported outcomes. This scoping review aimed to identify and categorize nurse-led nutritional interventions for malnourished individuals with liver disease and to explore associated health-related outcomes. A scoping review was conducted following the JBI methodology, searching PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and gray literature without year or language restrictions. Two reviewers independently screened and extracted studies. Eight studies published between 2015 and 2024 met inclusion criteria. Interventions were classified into three categories: (1) Development of nurse-led nutritional screening and assessment tools, (2) Direct nurse-led nutritional interventions including nutritional counseling or the use of specific diets, and (3) Nurse-led multidisciplinary nutritional care models in which nurses function as multidisciplinary team managers, education coordinators and psychological supporters. Reported outcomes included improved nutritional status, liver function, emotional well-being, and quality of life. This scoping review provides a structured overview of nurse-led nutritional interventions for malnourished patients with liver disease. By identifying three types of interventions, the findings highlight the meaningful contributions of nurses across assessment, direct care, and multidisciplinary support. Given the complex nature of liver disease, nurse-led nutritional interventions need to be considered within a comprehensive care strategy, especially in clinical and community settings for consistent and sustainable care.
